Our Story

What started as a simple act of love for one beloved family member has blossomed into a movement that has touched thousands of lives. The story of Pearl’s Memory Babies begins with Sandy and Wayne Cambron, whose quiet acts of compassion would eventually inspire a viral moment that changed everything.

A Love That Started Early

Sandy Cambron was always a little different. While most children preferred playing with friends their own age, Sandy found her greatest joy spending time with her loving grandparents. This early connection to seniors would prove to be the foundation for something much greater than she could have ever imagined.

When Sandy’s mother-in-law, Pearl, began her battle with Alzheimer’s and dementia, it felt natural for Sandy to draw close and find ways to “reach” her. Sandy and her husband Wayne experimented with many approaches, but it was Sandy’s own childhood love for baby dolls that sparked the idea that would change Pearl’s world—and eventually, the world of countless others.

Pearl's Companion

Sandy decided to gift Pearl a baby doll, hoping it might become a companion during her difficult journey. The transformation was remarkable. “She started talking again and she never went anywhere without that baby. She took ‘baby’ to the dining room with her and slept with her in her arms every night. When she passed away a year later, we even buried her with that well-loved baby doll.”

After Pearl passed away in 2006, Sandy and Wayne felt compelled to continue sharing the same comfort that Pearl had experienced with others walking the lonely path of Alzheimer’s and dementia. As they could afford it, they began quietly gifting baby dolls to memory care residents in facilities, carrying on Pearl’s legacy one doll at a time.

The Moment That Changed Everything

For years, Sandy and Wayne continued their quiet mission, honoring Pearl’s memory. Then in 2018, Sandy’s friend and co-worker Shannon Blair confided that her mother, Martha, was suffering greatly from Alzheimer’s. Sandy asked if she could provide a baby doll for Shannon’s mother. Shannon accepted, and was astonished at the profound reaction—especially from her mother’s roommate, a resident who never had visitors, who immediately held out her arms for the baby and wouldn’t let go all night.

Sandy and Wayne asked Shannon if she would coordinate with the facility for them to provide dolls for the entire memory care unit. Since Shannon’s mother was a resident there, Sandy asked Shannon if she would like to accompany her for what would become a life-changing delivery on Valentine’s Day 2018.

February 14, 2018: The Day Everything Changed

Sandy and Shannon loaded up two red wagons with about 40 baby dolls and 5 puppies, preparing for what they thought would be a quiet Valentine’s Day delivery. One by one, Sandy carefully presented each baby to the residents while Shannon, a talented photographer, captured the special moments on video. The response was overwhelming—there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as they spent hours visiting each resident.

Later that day, when the facility staff asked Shannon to share the photos so residents’ families could see them, she posted them publicly on Facebook with a simple message about having the best Valentine’s Day gift imaginable. By the next morning, the post had gone viral with half a million shares. Within 24 hours, messages poured in from 17 countries, and donations began flooding in from people touched by what they had witnessed.

Sandy considers that viral moment a blessing that helped lead her on the path she was destined to follow. Recognizing the immediate need to respond to this outpouring of support, Sandy & Wayne’s family took swift action that very evening—their son-in-law created a GoFundMe page to handle the influx of donations, and their daughter took the lead in establishing the organization’s nonprofit status. Pearl’s Memory Babies was officially born.

Continuing the Mission

Today, the team continues making deliveries in the exact same fashion as they did on that pivotal February 14th—Sandy carefully presenting each baby from the same red wagons; plus a wonderful addition of their Pearl’s Smiles Across Miles program. Their mission remains unchanged: to enrich the lives of Alzheimer’s and dementia residents one baby, puppy, and kitten at a time.

What began as Sandy and Wayne’s quiet tribute to Pearl has grown into something they never could have imagined, but their heart remains the same. They continue to reach as many residents as possible, not only delivering comfort through dolls and stuffed animals, but spending one-on-one time with each person to let them know they are loved and not forgotten.

Sandy and Wayne’s love for Pearl, combined with the special relationships formed along the way, led to that special day that changed everything. Over the years since, their work has become a testament to how one act of love can ripple outward to touch countless lives, giving purpose to those who have been robbed of a lifetime of memories and bringing comfort to families walking this difficult journey.

The legacy of Pearl lives on in every delivery, every smile, and every moment of joy they bring to residents across the country. Sandy and Wayne can never wait to get out and make the next delivery, knowing that somewhere, someone is finding the same comfort that Pearl once found in the simple gift of a baby doll.
